Caribana 2018: Modesty & Bacchanal
Regardless of the official name- Toronto Caribbean Carnival, we know, love and call it Caribana. Even if you don’t “play mas” or go to the parade, Toronto is buzzing with lots of parties and events the entire weekend. I love and hate planning long weekends and I didn’t know what I was going to do for Caribana but I did attend one event- Wayne Warner’s Carnival Brunch and Day party. I had an amazing time but I want to focus on my outfit and style choices.
Bacchanal
Bacchanal is a drunken or riotous celebration and a term commonly used in the Caribbean but more often in Trinidad. I didn’t participate in the parade this year- the featured image is from 2016. I am NOT reducing the cultural and political significance of carnival through out the Caribbean and the diaspora, but Caribana is bachannal. Point. Blank. Period.
Modesty
I got a few DM’s and texts about my provocative outfit. I do not prescribe to an appearance intended to avoid impropriety or indecency. I feel comfortable playing mas in a bikini, feathers and gems and I felt comfortable is my lace bra and pearl studded dress pants. Girls just want to have fun! Straight bacchanal!
