The 10 Commandments of Self-Love
The 10 commandants for practicing self-love are not reflective of any religious beliefs. It is only used as a literary device to demonstrate the point. The commandments are not presented in a hierarchy. These are the principles I use to guide the decisions I make regardless of my relationship status. I am not an expert or an authority. I am only a woman.
Thou shall practice good self-care.
Take care of your basic needs. Nourish yourself daily through healthy activities, like sound nutrition, exercise and proper sleep. Remember to set aside a day of rest.
Thou shalt not worship another person or thing.
Do not praise, envy or be jealous of individuals on social media. The bags, clothes, trips, relationships or luxuries come with a story that you are not privy. Social media is presentation of curated experiences.
Thou shall actively and regularly educate yourself.
I am not necessarily referring to formal education. Podcasts are great for learning new things.
Thou shall ask for help when you need it.
Help is not limited to assistance from family and friends or coworkers with errands, projects or assignments. If you are battling with mental health issues or concerns go seek help. The burden of emotional trauma or stress cannot always be remedied by the support of a loved one.
Thou shall always respect and honour yourself.
You should strive to cultivate your abilities, qualities. You command respect because of your character and values.
Thou shall set aside time for daily mindfulness practices.
Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment. You should calmly acknowledge and accept your feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. Mindful practices include meditation and deep breathing.
Thou shall masturbate regularly.
No one should hold the key to your sexual gratification. Love yourself and your body. Make love to yourself.
Thou shall dress in clothing that makes you feel amazing.
The right clothes, and even the right under garments can be empowering. Having confidence is an integral part self-love.
Thou shall laugh.
Life can be stressful. Please laugh!
Thou shall forgive.
Forgiveness can lead to healthier relationships greater spiritual and psychological well-being. Forgiveness can also relieve anxiety, stress and hostility.
